Henry Alder

Managing Director, Access to Care Partners LLC

Henry Alder is an experienced medical technology (MedTech) consultant working with start-up and established medical device, diagnostic and therapeutic companies. His background includes more than 20 years' experience resolving MedTech market access issues in the US with a focus on defining the clinical and economic value proposition and the evidence MedTech companies need to bring to payers and providers to obtain coverage and payment for their new products and services.

During his professional career he has been engaged in numerous initiatives evaluating market access for new medical technologies; developing strategies that MedTech companies need to successfully advocate with payers and providers; assessing reimbursement coding requirements; and synthesizing evidence MedTech companies need to bring to payers to obtain insurance coverage and payment. He also has led and participated in cross-functional teams responsible for new business integration, health economics assessment, MedTech policy analysis and new product commercialization strategies.

Currently Henry is the Managing Director of Access to Care Partners LLC (ATCP), a consulting firm he founded in 2015. ATCP helps MedTech companies identify strategies to secure market access for their new product or service. ATCP’s expertise includes market access assessment for new/underutilized technologies, clinical evidence synthesis, health economics analysis, reimbursement coding, as well as assistance in executing reimbursement strategies to secure health insurance coverage, coding and payment.

Prior to his current position Henry was Director of Reimbursement & Healthcare Economics at Ethicon, Inc. (a division of Johnson & Johnson). He was responsible for synthesizing, analyzing and acquiring evidence to demonstrate the clinical & economic value proposition for Ethicon’s minimally invasive products to providers and health insurance payers. He also participated in new business integration at Ethicon and identified the initiatives needed to secure reimbursement as well as coverage and coding for the new technologies acquired by Ethicon.

One of Henry’s significant accomplishments at Ethicon was providing the leadership and support to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons (ASMBS) to secure Medicare coverage and procedure codes for obesity surgery. As a result, many commercial payers and employers have adopted the Medicare coverage policy and offer obesity surgery coverage to their members. Henry was recognized for his efforts by the ASMBS and presented with the ASMBS Foundation’s Distinguished Industry Partner Award.

During his career at Ethicon, Henry led and participated on multiple cross-functional teams gaining favorable coverage, payment and reimbursement codes for many of Ethicon’s innovative technologies including the MAMMOTOME Vacuum-assisted Breast Biopsy System, the INDIGO Laser Thermotherapy System for enlarged prostates, and Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy, Hernia Repair and Hysterectomy procedures. Securing favorable reimbursement for these products & procedures drove Ethicon’s business and significantly contributed to Ethicon’s explosive growth.

Prior to Ethicon, Henry held several executive positions at the American Hospital Association (AHA) including Director of Clinical Services & Technology, the technology assessment arm of the AHA. This group identified the management implications of new and emerging medical technologies for hospital executives and provided strategies to successfully integrate new technologies into their organization.

Henry has an MS in Biomedical Engineering from Washington University, St. Louis and an MBA in Marketing and Finance from DePaul University, Chicago. He also has a BS is Biomedical Engineering from the University of Illinois, Chicago.

His current outside activities include serving as a mentor for several startup accelerators in the Chicago metropolitan area that help startup MedTech companies define their challenges, identify solutions and provide recommendations to innovate faster. He also is a member of ISPOR—The International Professional Society for Health Economics and Outcomes Research and serves on ISPOR’s Medical Device and Diagnostics and Digital Health special interest groups.
