Never Miss a New Course!
Patent searching is a critical yet often overlooked step in the innovation process that can save hardware startups thousands of dollars and months of development time. This workshop demystifies the patent search process, providing entrepreneurs with practical tools and strategies to navigate the patent landscape effectively before investing heavily in product development or legal fees.
Led by attorneys Suet Lee and Reid Huefner from Irwin IP LLP (now part of Miller Johnson), this session goes beyond theory to deliver actionable skills you can use immediately. You'll learn when and why conducting a patent search is essential—from validating your invention's novelty to understanding competitor landscapes and avoiding costly infringement issues down the road.
The workshop covers the strategic planning process behind effective patent searches, including how to define your invention precisely, identify relevant keywords, and think beyond obvious search terms. You'll discover the different categories of patent searches—from freedom-to-operate to patentability searches—and understand when each type serves your business needs. The instructors will introduce key patent databases and search tools, many of which are free or low-cost, making professional-grade searching accessible to bootstrapped startups.
